Daily drawdown rules explained

Most prop accounts are lost on a rule, not on a setup. The daily drawdown limit is the rule that ends the most accounts, and it is often misread.

What the daily drawdown limit is

A daily drawdown (or daily loss) limit caps how much your account may lose within one trading day. If you cross it, the firm typically closes the account or fails the challenge, regardless of what the trade would have done later.

Balance or equity?

This is the most common misunderstanding. Some firms measure the limit on balance (closed trades only), others on equity (balance plus floating profit and loss). With an equity-based limit, an open trade can breach the limit before you ever close it.

MT5 reports often show balance, so the number you see in a history report is not necessarily the number the firm watches. Read the rule text of your firm and find the exact wording.

Four details to check in your firm's rules

  • Basis: balance or equity.
  • Starting value: the daily limit is measured from a reference value, for example the balance or equity at the daily reset. Find out which one.
  • Reset time: the "day" usually follows a fixed server or time-zone clock, which may differ from your broker's server time.
  • Included costs: whether commissions, swaps and fees count toward the loss.

Firms differ, and rules change. Always use the firm's current official rules, not a forum post or a comparison table.

Why a personal stop inside the hard limit helps

The firm's limit is a hard stop, not a target. Many traders work with a second, smaller limit of their own:

  1. Pick a personal daily loss limit that sits clearly below the firm's limit.
  2. Write it down before the session starts.
  3. Treat it as the real limit. When it is hit, you are done for the day.

The buffer absorbs slippage, spreads at the rollover and floating losses that move faster than you can react.

Where a guard tool fits in

Discipline fails most often when you are in a losing streak and emotional. A guard that runs inside MetaTrader 5 can watch your daily loss against the limit you set and act when it is reached, so the rule does not depend on your mood in the moment. PropBlaster's Daily Loss Guard is free in the MQL5 Market; the PropBlaster Cockpit adds a hard lock, commitment mode and a journal that records every override. It enforces rules you define; it gives no signals and no trade recommendations.

Server-side stop losses stay with your broker. A guard running on your PC or VPS only works while the terminal is running.
